Road Safety: An Important Step in Mitigating the Economic Impact of Road Accidents

Road accidents not only represent a serious risk to driver safety but can also have profound economic repercussions. According to the Mexican Institute of Transportation, in 2022, losses of 2,024 million pesos were reported due to road accidents on federal highways in Mexico. A supply chain affected by accidents has an impact in the form of delays in delivery times or material damage to final products. These implications trigger a domino effect that can affect the local or regional economy.

To mitigate the problem of road accidents, it is essential that roads and highways implement effective safety measures. This includes continuous improvement of road infrastructure, with clear and adequate signage that informs drivers about speed limits, road conditions, and warnings of potential dangers. Investment in traffic monitoring and control systems, such as cameras and speed sensors, also plays an important role in dealing with risk situations. In addition, regular and preventive maintenance of highways ensures that road conditions remain optimal and reduces risks associated with structural failures.

To address this challenge, the Monterrey-Saltillo Highway Concessionaire (CAMS) continuously works to improve road safety along the highway, implementing technological and operational measures aimed at monitoring traffic, efficiently managing emergencies, and improving visibility in adverse conditions. This approach seeks, in addition to reducing the risk of accidents, to offer a safer and more reliable travel experience for all highway users, both cargo and private. An example of this is the large number of cameras located along the highway and connected to the Traffic Control Center, which is linked to the company's X (Twitter) profile. This allows real-time information to be offered to users about the state of the road, incidents, works, or weather conditions.

Despite all this, the human factor is key in reducing road accidents through the adoption of good driving practices. It is essential that drivers respect traffic rules, maintain an adequate speed, and refrain from dangerous behaviors such as using electronic devices while driving. It is also essential not to drive tired or drowsy. According to the National Guard, fatigue is behind 48% of accidents. In addition, it is crucial that drivers know and respond adequately to the indicators and signals provided by roads and highways, such as warnings of changing conditions or temporary restrictions.

By combining efforts to improve both road infrastructure and user behavior, a significant reduction in the frequency and severity of road accidents can be achieved, mitigating the economic impact and, above all, increasing driver safety.
